It rained the day before and it rained the day after, but the day of the Friendship Games,
Friday October 10, 2008 could not have been more perfect. With bright, clear skies, balmy air,
spirited competition, gifts, prizes, personal items, fun, food and games; it was perfect. “This is
my first time at the Friendship Games and I am having the time of my life; this is great,” one
participant said as she rushed off to dance to the sounds of Steel Away Band. Not to mention the
excitement that was created around the store.
Here are some shots from the Friendship Games Store as the shopping experience kicked into
full gear! Such a joyful occasion that touched the lives of more than 1,500 people living with
mental illness.
Looking on, it is not possible to tell the
difference between consumer and volunteer.
And that is the way we like it, as we stand in
solidarity with those who live with mental
illness. Not wanting to waste any time before
we reconvene as a network to capture the
thoughts and ideas for how to improve the next
Friendship Games, we will be meeting at New
Hope Drop In Center (1251 NW 36th St.
Miami) on Tuesday, October 28, 2008, to
discuss those details.
Calling all volunteers to that meeting so that we can continue to improve the Friendship
Games. Please note the Feedback form enclosed; copy and hand it out to consumers to
complete. Be sure to bring them to the meeting. We need their input, and your continued support.

"Everyone's a Winner at the Friendship Games"

The Friendship Games Foundation supports a unique coalition
of many Mental Health Organizations, Community Volunteers,
Supporters and Friends in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties
working towards the promotion of awareness and social
acceptance of people with mental illness. The Friendship Games
Foundation supports planned activities that promote that goal.
The objectives are as follows:
• Promote mental and physical health as well as spiritual
growth for consumers of mental health services.
• Unify mental health agencies and service providers.
• Educate the general public about the importance of mental
health and realities of psychiatric disorders.
Remember, People with Mental Illness, are People First!
